AI service platforms increasingly want a public record that a model evaluation, creator license check or agent task actually happened. Ethereum blob transactions appear attractive because they expand data availability for rollups. But the key architectural distinction is that temporary data availability is not the same as permanent evidence retention. A defensible system must separate the hash committed on-chain, the underlying evidence preserved elsewhere, and the business decision that depends on both. This article develops an evidence design rather than treating lower transaction cost as a guarantee of recoverability. All proposed cost figures and acceptance thresholds are engineering assumptions, not measurements of a deployed marketplace.

What EIP-4844 actually provides

The Ethereum Improvement Proposal for blob transactions, EIP-4844, was created in February 2022. Its design introduces a transaction format carrying blob data intended for rollup data availability. The EVM cannot directly read the blob payload, although commitments can be accessed through defined mechanisms. The specification describes a limited historical availability expectation rather than permanent storage. An agent marketplace should therefore never represent a blob reference as a downloadable archive. It is a transport and commitment component in a wider evidence system. A receipt containing only a blob identifier becomes operationally weak once ordinary infrastructure no longer serves the original bytes. EIP-4844 is the underlying specification.

For a sample purchase order, identify the exact assertion being proved: task accepted, policy checked, or deliverable reviewed. Store its canonical document hash and a schema version separately from the transport choice. Verify that a new auditor can recompute the digest from the original content without relying on the submitting agent.

Build a three-layer evidence ledger

Layer one is the business receipt: immutable identifiers for buyer, authorized seller, service scope and acceptance decision. Layer two is a content-addressed evidence package holding signed evaluation traces, outputs with permitted redactions, and reviewer decisions. Layer three is the anchoring layer, which may involve a public commitment or a rollup checkpoint. This decomposition avoids pretending that exposing raw customer prompts is required to obtain transparency. Encrypt sensitive evidence and retain access controls off-chain. Hashes and timestamps show consistency of a package, not that the underlying evaluation was honest. A deterministic hash of fabricated evidence is still fabricated evidence. EIP-4844 is the underlying specification.

As a worked example, suppose an agent returns a generated media clip after human approval. The ledger records the rendition identifier, reviewer role, acceptance policy revision and object hash. A later dispute should reconstruct the same package even when temporary data-availability nodes cannot be queried.

Price durable storage separately from blob gas

Treat one-time chain submission, redundant storage, retrieval tests and retention administration as distinct cost centers. Let C equal transaction charges plus encrypted storage plus quarterly restore drills plus incident support. Divide by accepted jobs, not attempted jobs, to obtain a useful unit cost. For illustration only, a service with hypothetical fixed costs of 600 units and 300 accepted jobs has two units of fixed burden per accepted job before variable charges. If only 150 jobs meet acceptance, that burden doubles. The model intentionally does not supply live gas prices or claim that a particular layer-two system has a permanent cost advantage. EIP-4844 is the underlying specification.

Keep assumptions in a visible spreadsheet: evidence package size, cold storage retrieval rate, operator overhead and dispute probability. Change one assumption at a time to see whether savings come from cheaper publication or from silently reducing recoverability.

Test retrieval beyond the comfortable window

The most informative operational test is a late audit, not the successful receipt generated at submission time. Build a test fixture with a known object digest, rollup transaction reference, proof material and retention policy. First verify the object immediately. Then simulate loss of a preferred storage provider and recover from a separately administered replica. Finally evaluate a request after the ordinary blob-serving interval has passed. The expected result is that the signed business evidence can still be reconstructed from durable stores even if the original blob bytes are unavailable through normal nodes. EIP-4844 is the underlying specification.

Fail the drill if the team can produce only screenshots of dashboards, an unverifiable URL or the existence of a transaction hash. A successful public commitment without the evidence bytes cannot answer a customer dispute about what was actually accepted.

Avoid private-data leakage and unverifiable claims

Publishing chat transcripts, model prompts, customer names or creator likeness files to a broad availability layer can turn an audit into an unnecessary disclosure. A stronger design uses minimal public commitments and retains detailed artifacts under role-based access and a stated deletion schedule. A rights withdrawal must be evaluated separately from record integrity: deleting licensed media from distribution does not require rewriting the historical fact that a prior transaction occurred. The public record should not expose a user’s conversations merely because the service is decentralized. EIP-4844 is the underlying specification.

Use permission classes for each artifact: public statement, auditor-only metadata, encrypted licensed asset and deletion-restricted record. The responsible operator should know which class can be retrieved by a marketplace buyer versus an external investigator.

Release gate for an AI agent marketplace

Before launch, demand a complete rehearsal involving the developer, compliance lead and an independent reviewer. Create a test order, execute an intentionally failing evaluation, retry an accepted evaluation, rotate a storage credential and verify that settlement accepts only the correct signed decision. Capture the software versions used to produce the digest and commit a replay-resistant order identifier. Compare the resulting proof against the service-level promise shown to customers. If customers are promised evidence after two years, temporary data availability alone cannot satisfy the promise. EIP-4844 is the underlying specification.

The pass criterion is explicit: a reviewer with approved access can obtain a coherent package after a provider outage; unauthorized parties cannot download private artifacts; and the ledger reconciles accepted jobs without counting retries twice. That is evidence assurance, not a marketing claim about blockchains.
