An AI agent buying storage, inference or content services may represent a business account whose authority is controlled by a multisignature wallet. Verifying that a human signed a message is not the same as verifying that a contract account currently considers the message authorized. This distinction becomes critical when an administrator changes signers, revokes an old key or pauses a purchasing policy between order creation and settlement. ERC-1271 offers a contract-level signature verification interface; it does not, by itself, prove that the service, price or business purpose is acceptable. The following design turns that distinction into concrete controls for AI service procurement.
Why ordinary signature recovery is not enough
The ERC-1271 specification, created 25 July 2018, defines a method by which a contract can say whether a signature is valid for a supplied hash. An externally owned account controls a private key and conventional recovery logic can associate a signature with an address. A contract wallet may instead require several owners, a policy module, an approved-message registry or another governance mechanism. Attempting to recover a single owner address and treating it as the wallet’s consent ignores the contract’s authorization rules.
The interface returns a designated magic value when valid; it is not simply a true-or-false signature parser. A procurement verifier must call the relevant contract on the intended chain and inspect the result. In addition, the verifier should treat validation as state-dependent. A signature valid before a signer rotation may no longer be valid afterward. Caching a “valid” result indefinitely is unsafe for a changing business authorization policy.
Bind the order to a specific chain, buyer and service
An agent purchase order needs a clear semantic payload: buyer contract address, seller identity, service identifier, maximum amount, currency or token, expiry, nonce and an exact description of the deliverable. The message should specify its intended chain and verifying contract to avoid cross-environment reuse. Otherwise the same signature could be replayed in a test environment or on another service that interprets identical bytes differently. Price fields must be integers with unambiguous units, not natural-language estimates.
EIP-712 typed structured data supplies an important pattern for signing readable, domain-separated messages. It does not automatically solve replay attacks: the design must actually include appropriate domain values and unique operation identifiers. Use it alongside ERC-1271, not as a replacement. The first describes structured signing, while the second lets the smart-contract account determine authorization for the resulting hash and signature.
Separate quote acceptance from settlement authority
An agent can compare three inference providers and recommend the least expensive acceptable option without having authority to pay any of them. The resulting quote selection should be a proposed business action, not a settlement transaction. Create an explicit approval state machine: quote requested, offer evaluated, approval pending, authorized, executed, reconciled or expired. Store the signer-policy version observed during authorization and verify that the operation remains within the current spending envelope before execution.
Consider an illustrative monthly budget of 2,000 units, with each delegated agent allowed at most 100 units per order. A contract signature confirming an order for 80 units does not justify ten separate charges of 80 units if the signed payload intended a single purchase. Make the nonce single-use and link the settlement receipt to a unique order identifier. The amounts are hypothetical examples, not claims about market rates or particular protocols.
Re-check authorization when governance changes
A signer rotation, security incident or organization restructuring can change the wallet’s validation logic. Suppose a purchase was approved on Monday but settlement is attempted on Friday after a signer has been removed. A naive off-chain verifier might accept Monday’s cached result. A safer design re-checks ERC-1271 against current contract state before committing funds and rejects orders whose expiry or budget boundaries have changed. Business policy can additionally require a fresh approval if a material threshold is crossed.
The official ethereum.org tutorial on EIP-1271 explains why a contract wallet cannot be treated as an ordinary private-key account. For teams building agent marketplaces, the lesson is operational: keep the verification reference, chain ID, block context and contract address in the audit receipt. Off-chain caching can improve throughput, but the cache validity window is itself a risk decision that needs measurement and invalidation.
Test malicious inputs and failed settlement paths
Build a test suite with a correct signature, a signature from a removed owner, a valid signature for the wrong chain, an expired order, a reused nonce and a deliberately malformed payload. Include a contract implementation that rejects signatures under a restrictive policy, and a slow or gas-intensive implementation to exercise resource limits. Verify that a rejection leaves no partial payment or irrevocable entitlement behind. Do not equate a successful JSON response with a completed, final on-chain transfer.
Distinguish signature validity, transaction submission, inclusion and finality in logs. On an execution error, an agent should surface the reason to the authorized operator rather than invent a new recipient address or automatically increase the spending cap. The test report should record expected and observed state transitions, replay checks and the precise conditions under which a human must intervene. This gives auditors evidence beyond a screenshot of a successful wallet connection.
A design checklist for AI-service marketplaces
For each order, store its typed-data schema revision, chain context, buyer contract, signer-policy snapshot, maximum budget, expiry and one-time nonce. At approval, use the wallet’s contract validation rules; at settlement, confirm both authorization and business invariants again. On revocation, block outstanding orders that are no longer valid and retain a reason-coded receipt. Apply monitoring for repeated rejected signatures and discrepancies between order budgets and actual debits.
ERC-1271 is a useful trust primitive but not a whole marketplace safety system. It cannot attest that an AI model delivered a correct answer, that a data licence is enforceable or that a quote was economically sensible. Those judgments require separate acceptance evidence, contractual rights and, where necessary, human approval. The value of the standard is narrower and more durable: it prevents a marketplace from assuming that one private key permanently speaks for every organization-controlled wallet.
