In conventional social media, identity is mainly a profile and a graph of followers. In AI social products, identity is richer: an AI personality may have a creator, voice, visual appearance, behavioral rules, memory and an ongoing relationship with each user. That makes identity infrastructure more important. Users need to know which digital personalities are authentic, creators need control over representations of themselves, and platforms need a reliable way to separate public identity from private relationship state.<\/p>\n
Decentralized identity does not require every profile field to live on a blockchain. The useful idea is that identifiers and credentials can be verified across services without one platform being the sole authority. A creator might sign a credential stating that a particular AI persona is authorized. A user might carry a proof of membership or age eligibility without exposing unrelated data. The receiving service verifies the credential and applies its own policy.<\/p>\n
It is tempting to say users should be able to move an AI relationship from one app to another. In practice, portability needs layers. Public preferences, selected profile attributes and user-approved summaries may be portable. Raw conversations, intimate memories and generated media may be too sensitive or contractually restricted. A good design gives users explicit controls over what can move. Portability should increase agency, not create a permanent public record of private relationships.<\/p>\n
AI makes impersonation cheap. A verifiable credential can let a creator, agency or rights holder attest that a digital twin is official. Marketplaces can display that status and reject unauthorized claims. This is more flexible than a single platform badge because the credential can be checked elsewhere. Revocation is essential: if a licensing relationship ends, the rights holder needs a way to invalidate the credential without rewriting every historical transaction.<\/p>\n
One interesting model is a user-controlled relationship passport. Instead of exporting a full transcript, the user could authorize a compact set of state: preferred name, topics, boundaries, important facts, relationship stage and selected milestones. The destination agent could use that state to avoid starting from zero. The data should be encrypted and selectively disclosed. A blockchain might record permission or provenance, while the actual relationship state remains off-chain.<\/p>\n
Decentralized credentials can also improve discovery. An AI personality could prove creator authorization, age suitability, membership in a network or completion of safety review. Users could filter for those properties. Reputation should still be contextual. A popular entertainment character is not automatically a trustworthy financial agent. Platforms should combine portable credentials with their own quality and safety signals.<\/p>\n
