For AI-operated Web3 wallets, a tokenized vault share is not the same as an underlying token balance. This guide maps ERC-4626 calls to human authorization, correct units and six reproducible adapter tests.

Why vault shares cannot be treated as cash balances

An AI agent that manages an on-chain treasury might be asked to move a small amount of assets into a yield-bearing vault. From the user’s perspective the task is a transfer, but the on-chain representation is more subtle. ERC-4626, created in December 2021, standardizes a tokenized-vault interface for a single underlying ERC-20 asset. The user may receive vault shares rather than the same quantity of directly spendable underlying tokens. An agent dashboard that simply adds share balances to wallet cash balances can therefore mislead the owner. The first control is to identify asset units, share units and conversion assumptions separately. This guide analyzes execution risk for a software design; it is not a recommendation to invest in a particular vault or asset.

Inventory entry points and return values

The ERC-4626 interface describes operations such as deposit, mint, withdraw and redeem, with corresponding conversions, previews and maxima. Those functions are not synonyms. The amount of underlying assets required to mint a share target can differ from the assets returned when shares are redeemed, and rounding matters. A safe agent must specify the requested operation and read its expected amount using the contract’s supported preview methods. The operation should be tied to the actual vault contract, chain and asset address. Do not present a generic “deposit $100” action without revealing the destination and what the wallet receives. A simulated preview is useful, but the final transaction can still fail or differ because of changing state, fees, timing or adversarial behavior.

Use conversion ranges rather than invented guaranteed yields

For a hypothetical illustration, assume 1,000 underlying units back 800 vault shares. The illustrative conversion is 1.25 asset units per share before any fee or changing contract state. If the user plans to redeem 80 shares, a naive estimate is 100 underlying units; the actual contract’s preview and post-transaction evidence must still be examined. The example does not establish that any vault offers positive returns or that shares retain their value. A contract may impose limits, lose value or experience a failure. Show the calculated units, actual on-chain values and the uncertainty separately. Never use a forecasted return as a confirmed current balance, and never let the language model round an amount upward beyond the human-approved budget.

Turn user intent into a bounded transaction plan

Before executing, capture the owner’s approved asset, maximum spend, vault contract, recipient, acceptable slippage or output range, and expiration time. An approval to rebalance one small amount should not grant the agent a perpetual unlimited token allowance. Where ERC-20 approvals are involved, inspect existing spenders and residual permissions separately. If the plan includes a deposit followed by a later withdrawal, make the withdrawal a new authorized step rather than assume permanent consent. The interface should show the distinction between preparing a transaction and signing it, including the full calldata destination or a reliably decoded representation. Preserve enough information for human review without collecting or transmitting private wallet signing keys to a general-purpose AI prompt.

Acknowledge asynchronous operations and limitations

The Ethereum developer documentation explains that ERC-4626 primarily models atomic deposit and redemption flows, while ERC-7540 extends it to asynchronous vault requests. An automated agent should not assume that every investment or redemption settles in one transaction. Model states such as request submitted, funds committed, claim available and claim completed. Retry logic must be idempotent where practical; blindly resubmitting a non-idempotent deposit can double the exposure. Treat third-party oracle data and displayed yield estimates as untrusted until independently verified. If the vault pauses withdrawals, the agent must not fabricate liquidity or hide the blocked operation from the user. Record the failure with the applicable block and contract state.

A six-case vault integration audit

Before shipping an AI-vault adapter, test ordinary deposit, rounding at tiny amounts, an input above maxDeposit, a changed share-to-asset ratio, an asynchronous redemption if supported, and a revoked token allowance. Record transaction hashes, share and asset denominations, contract identifiers and the approved plan. Reject a release if the user-visible report says “cash received” when the transaction only minted a claim token. The ERC-4626 specification and ethereum.org developer material describe the technical interfaces; this decision matrix is an original operational safeguard for autonomous software. It does not guarantee investment outcomes or eliminate smart-contract risk. Independent security review and cautious authorization remain necessary before enabling any real asset movement. An auditor should also compare the wallet’s numerical precision with the token’s declared decimals and retain evidence that transaction simulation was performed on the intended chain. Those checks help prevent deceptive balances in the dashboard.
